The average castor oil seed import price stood at $2,090 per ton in July 2023, with an increase of 3.1% against the previous month. In general, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in January 2023 when the average import price increased by 26% against the previous month. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $2,528 per ton. From February 2023 to July 2023, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In July 2023, the country with the highest price was Canada ($7,513 per ton), while the price for India stood at $1,870 per ton.
From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (-0.7%).

The average castor oil seed export price stood at $3,308 per ton in July 2023, growing by 13% against the previous month. Overall, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in October 2022 when the average export price increased by 31% month-to-month. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $4,346 per ton. From November 2022 to July 2023, the the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In July 2023, the country with the highest price was Brazil ($14,033 per ton), while the average price for exports to Canada ($2,792 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Brazil (+13.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Castor Oil Seed Imports in the United States
Castor oil seed imports into the United States dropped dramatically to 57K tons in 2022, waning by -30.5% on the year before. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 55%. As a result, imports attained the peak of 82K tons, and then declined rapidly in the following year.
In value terms, castor oil seed imports fell to $120M in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated buoyant growth from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.3% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +59.9% against 2020 indices.
