Chestnut Price in the United States (CIF) - 2022
In 2022, the average chestnut import price amounted to $3,259 per ton, waning by -18.4% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the average import price increased by 21% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $4,359 per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Portugal ($6,237 per ton), while the price for China ($699 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (+5.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
Chestnut Price in the United States (FOB) - 2022
The average chestnut export price stood at $4,612 per ton in 2022, growing by 27% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the average export price increased by 46% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $6,002 per ton. From 2020 to 2022, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Canada ($5,951 per ton), while the average price for exports to Mexico amounted to $2,584 per ton.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Italy (+7.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
Chestnut Imports in the United States
In 2022, approx. 3K tons of chestnuts were imported into the United States; surging by 20% on 2021. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, chestnut imports declined modestly to $9.6M in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed a deep reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 2%.

Chestnut Exports in the United States
In 2022, overseas shipments of chestnuts decreased by -58.1% to 24 tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Overall, exports recorded a sharp setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 459%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 352 tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, chestnut exports fell dramatically to $112K in 2022. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a precipitous contraction.
