The average chlorides; of aluminium import price stood at $371 per ton in August 2023, shrinking by -13.9% against the previous month. Over the last twelve months, it increased at an average monthly rate of +2.6%. The growth pace was the most rapid in November 2022 when the average import price increased by 16% month-to-month. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $431 per ton in July 2023, and then reduced in the following month.
As there is only one major supplying country, the average price level is determined by prices for the UK.
From August 2022 to August 2023, the rate of growth in terms of prices for the UK amounted to +12.6% per month.
Chlorides; of Aluminium Price in France (FOB) - 2022
In 2022, the average chlorides; of aluminium export price amounted to $486 per ton, waning by -1.7% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed mild growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the average export price increased by 96% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $831 per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($1,886 per ton), while the average price for exports to Switzerland ($228 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Argentina (+11.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Chlorides; of Aluminium Imports in France
In 2022, supplies from abroad of chlorides; of aluminia decreased by -1% to 44K tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Overall, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 1%. As a result, imports attained the peak of 44K tons, and then shrank in the following year.
In value terms, chlorides; of aluminium imports rose significantly to $12M in 2022. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a mild descent.

In 2022, overseas shipments of chlorides; of aluminia decreased by -24.6% to 9.5K tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Over the period under review, exports recorded a deep reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 11% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 14K tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, chlorides; of aluminium exports dropped significantly to $4.6M in 2022. Overall, exports continue to indicate a pronounced reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 28%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $6.2M, and then contracted markedly in the following year.
