World Consumption of Chloroform (Trichloromethane)

In 2022, consumption of chloroform (trichloromethane) increased by 6.8% to 1.7M tons for the first time since 2012, thus ending a nine-year declining trend. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a pronounced decrease. Global consumption peaked at 2.5M tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

The global chloroform market size was estimated at $2.7B in 2022, surging by 9.1% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). In general, consumption, however, showed a abrupt contraction. Global consumption peaked at $4.5B in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Consumption By Country

The countries with the highest volumes of consumption in 2022 were China (478K tons), the United States (386K tons) and India (186K tons), with a combined 63% share of global consumption. The Netherlands, Japan, the UK, Turkey, Spain, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Italy and Vietnam lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 21%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Saudi Arabia (with a CAGR of +1.2%), while consumption for the other global leaders experienced a decline in the consumption figures.

In value terms, China ($533M), Egypt ($372M) and Turkey ($249M) were the countries with the highest levels of market value in 2022, with a combined 43% share of the global market. The United States, India, Spain, Saudi Arabia, Vietnam, the Netherlands, Japan, the UK, South Korea and Italy lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 34%.

Vietnam, with a CAGR of +3.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to market size among the main consuming countries over the period under review, while market for the other global leaders experienced a decline in the market figures.

In 2022, the highest levels of chloroform per capita consumption was registered in the Netherlands (2,688 kg per 1000 persons), followed by the United States (1,151 kg per 1000 persons), Saudi Arabia (890 kg per 1000 persons) and Spain (699 kg per 1000 persons), while the world average per capita consumption of chloroform was estimated at 213 kg per 1000 persons.

In the Netherlands, chloroform per capita consumption decreased by an average annual rate of -1.1% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining consuming countries recorded the following average annual rates of per capita consumption growth: the United States (-3.9% per year) and Saudi Arabia (-0.9% per year).

Production

World Production of Chloroform (Trichloromethane)

In 2022, production of chloroform (trichloromethane) was finally on the rise to reach 1.7M tons for the first time since 2012, thus ending a nine-year declining trend. Over the period under review, production, however, saw a pronounced curtailment. Global production peaked at 2.4M tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, chloroform production expanded notably to $2.7B in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, recorded a perceptible downturn. Over the period under review, global production hit record highs at $4.4B in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Production By Country

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were China (486K tons), the United States (404K tons) and India (180K tons), with a combined 63% share of global production. Germany, the UK, South Korea, Turkey, Spain, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Vietnam, France and Japan lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 21%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Germany (with a CAGR of +2.1%), while production for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports

World Imports of Chloroform (Trichloromethane)

In 2022, purchases abroad of chloroform (trichloromethane) increased by 27% to 88K tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. In general, imports, however, showed a abrupt downturn. Over the period under review, global imports hit record highs at 242K tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, chloroform imports soared to $92M in 2022. Overall, imports, however, saw a perceptible downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 44% against the previous year. Global imports peaked at $139M in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports By Country

The Netherlands represented the largest importer of chloroform (trichloromethane) in the world, with the volume of imports recording 31K tons, which was approx. 36% of total imports in 2022. Italy (12K tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 14% share, followed by India (12%), Japan (11%), Mexico (7.3%) and France (6%). Pakistan (3K tons) held a minor share of total imports.

Imports into the Netherlands decreased at an average annual rate of -4.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, France (+36.0%), Japan (+20.3%), Pakistan (+12.1%) and India (+1.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, France emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the world, with a CAGR of +36.0% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Italy (-4.4%) and Mexico (-6.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of the Netherlands (+15 p.p.), Japan (+10 p.p.), India (+8 p.p.), France (+5.9 p.p.), Italy (+5.8 p.p.), Pakistan (+3 p.p.) and Mexico (+2.2 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the Netherlands ($28M) constitutes the largest market for imported chloroform (trichloromethane) worldwide, comprising 30% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Italy ($12M), with a 14% share of global imports. It was followed by Japan, with a 7.5% share.

In the Netherlands, chloroform imports contracted by an average annual rate of -1.2% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Italy (-2.1% per year) and Japan (+24.3% per year).

Import Prices By Country

The average chloroform import price stood at $1,047 per ton in 2022, picking up by 13% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 42% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Pakistan ($1,737 per ton), while India ($625 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Pakistan (+4.0%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Exports

World Exports of Chloroform (Trichloromethane)

In 2022, approx. 105K tons of chloroform (trichloromethane) were exported worldwide; reducing by -1.5% compared with 2021. Overall, exports continue to indicate a noticeable descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 58% against the previous year. The global exports peaked at 140K tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, chloroform exports soared to $95M in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded a pronounced increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 82%. Over the period under review, the global exports reached the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Exports By Country

Germany was the major exporting country with an export of around 42K tons, which resulted at 40% of total exports. The United States (19K tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by France (14K tons), China (8.3K tons), South Korea (7K tons) and Taiwan (Chinese) (6.5K tons). All these countries together held near 52% share of total exports. India (4.2K tons) held a little share of total exports.

Germany experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of chloroform (trichloromethane). At the same time, China (+70.5%) and India (+35.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, China emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +70.5% from 2012-2022. By contrast, South Korea (-1.5%), Taiwan (Chinese) (-2.0%), the United States (-9.2%) and France (-9.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. France (+14 p.p.), Germany (+12 p.p.), China (+7.9 p.p.) and India (+3.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the global exports, while the United States saw its share reduced by -17.4% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Germany ($43M) remains the largest chloroform supplier worldwide, comprising 45% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United States ($18M), with a 19% share of global exports. It was followed by France, with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Germany amounted to +6.6%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United States (-4.1% per year) and France (+38.3% per year).

Export Prices By Country

In 2022, the average chloroform export price amounted to $913 per ton, increasing by 51% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a remarkable increase. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($1,023 per ton), while Taiwan (Chinese) ($383 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by France (+53.1%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
