The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the production volume increased by 6.1%. Global production peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

In value terms, chromates production expanded rapidly to $271M in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, saw a slight reduction. By contrast, China (-2.3%), Thailand (-2.4%), India (-5.1%), France (-7.5%), Brazil (-9.1%) and Italy (-12.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Germany ($47M) constitutes the largest market for imported chromates, dichromates and peroxochromates worldwide, comprising 25% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Japan ($23M), with a 12% share of global imports. It was followed by Uruguay, with a 9.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Germany was relatively modest. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Japan (-1.1% per year) and Uruguay (+5.3% per year).

Import Prices By Country

In 2022, the average chromates import price amounted to $2,098 per ton, increasing by 51% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa amounted to +6.6%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Kazakhstan (-5.4% per year) and Russia (-13.0% per year).

Export Prices By Country

In 2022, the average chromates export price amounted to $1,869 per ton, increasing by 44% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was India ($2,665 per ton), while Kazakhstan ($1,329 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
