Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the consumption volume increased by 9.6%. Global consumption peaked at 204K tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The global chromates market size surged to $344M in 2022, with an increase of 16% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). Overall, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Global consumption peaked at $360M in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Consumption By Country

The countries with the highest volumes of consumption in 2022 were Russia (44K tons), Kazakhstan (35K tons) and Germany (29K tons), together comprising 56% of global consumption. Japan, Argentina, Estonia, Uruguay, South Africa, Italy, China, Colombia, Romania and India lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 33%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Argentina (with a CAGR of +17.8%), while consumption for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Russia ($67M), Germany ($46M) and Kazakhstan ($41M) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of market value in 2022, with a combined 45% share of the global market. Argentina, Japan, Uruguay, Estonia, Italy, Colombia, South Africa, China, Romania and India lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 39%.

Argentina, with a CAGR of +18.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to market size among the main consuming countries over the period under review, while market for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the highest levels of chromates per capita consumption was registered in Estonia (6,120 kg per 1000 persons), followed by Uruguay (1,955 kg per 1000 persons), Kazakhstan (1,823 kg per 1000 persons) and Germany (346 kg per 1000 persons), while the world average per capita consumption of chromates was estimated at 24 kg per 1000 persons.

In Estonia, chromates per capita consumption declined by an average annual rate of -2.4% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining consuming countries recorded the following average annual rates of per capita consumption growth: Uruguay (+0.7% per year) and Kazakhstan (+2.3% per year).

Production

World Production of Chromates, Dichromates And Peroxochromates

Global chromates production expanded modestly to 168K tons in 2022, with an increase of 1.7% on the year before. In general, production recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the production volume increased by 6.1%. Global production peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

In value terms, chromates production expanded rapidly to $271M in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, saw a slight reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the production volume increased by 9.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, global production hit record highs at $314M in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Production By Country

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Russia (49K tons), South Africa (47K tons) and Kazakhstan (45K tons), with a combined 84% share of global production. Estonia, Argentina and Italy lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 14%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Estonia (with a CAGR of +2,433.8%), while production for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports

World Imports of Chromates, Dichromates And Peroxochromates

Global chromates imports dropped to 89K tons in 2022, reducing by -13% against the previous year. In general, imports continue to indicate a pronounced contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, global imports hit record highs at 141K tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, chromates imports skyrocketed to $186M in 2022. Overall, imports showed a pronounced curtailment. Global imports peaked at $252M in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports By Country

In 2022, Germany (29K tons) represented the key importer of chromates, dichromates and peroxochromates, comprising 32% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Japan (12K tons), Uruguay (6.8K tons), China (6.8K tons), Colombia (4.9K tons) and India (4K tons), together committing a 39% share of total imports. Romania (3K tons), Austria (2.5K tons), the United States (2.5K tons), France (2.3K tons), Italy (1.8K tons), Thailand (1.7K tons) and Brazil (1.6K tons) took a little share of total imports.

Germany experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of chromates, dichromates and peroxochromates. At the same time, Austria (+12.8%), Colombia (+10.1%), Romania (+8.2%), the United States (+6.9%) and Uruguay (+1.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Austria emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the world, with a CAGR of +12.8% from 2012-2022. Japan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, China (-2.3%), Thailand (-2.4%), India (-5.1%), France (-7.5%), Brazil (-9.1%) and Italy (-12.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Germany (+10 p.p.), Colombia (+4 p.p.), Japan (+3.8 p.p.), Uruguay (+2.7 p.p.), Romania (+2.3 p.p.), Austria (+2.2 p.p.) and the United States (+1.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the global imports from 2012-2022, the share of Brazil (-1.6 p.p.) and Italy (-3.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Germany ($47M) constitutes the largest market for imported chromates, dichromates and peroxochromates worldwide, comprising 25% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Japan ($23M), with a 12% share of global imports. It was followed by Uruguay, with a 9.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Germany was relatively modest. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Japan (-1.1% per year) and Uruguay (+5.3% per year).

Import Prices By Country

In 2022, the average chromates import price amounted to $2,098 per ton, increasing by 51% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($3,490 per ton), while China ($1,612 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by France (+4.6%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Exports

World Exports of Chromates, Dichromates And Peroxochromates

In 2022, approx. 66K tons of chromates, dichromates and peroxochromates were exported worldwide; waning by -21.1% compared with the previous year's figure. Overall, exports saw a perceptible decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 48%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 104K tons. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the global exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, chromates exports rose remarkably to $124M in 2022. In general, exports showed a noticeable curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 20% against the previous year. The global exports peaked at $187M in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports By Country

In 2022, South Africa (41K tons) was the key exporter of chromates, dichromates and peroxochromates, creating 61% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Kazakhstan (10K tons) and Russia (4.9K tons), together creating a 23% share of total exports. Estonia (2.4K tons), China (1.8K tons), Belgium (1.3K tons) and India (1.2K tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to chromates exports from South Africa stood at +6.2%. At the same time, Estonia (+10.1%), Belgium (+7.3%) and China (+2.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Estonia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +10.1% from 2012-2022. By contrast, India (-2.3%), Kazakhstan (-4.2%) and Russia (-15.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of South Africa and Estonia increased by +38 and +2.6 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($69M) remains the largest chromates supplier worldwide, comprising 56% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kazakhstan ($14M), with an 11% share of global exports. It was followed by Russia, with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa amounted to +6.6%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Kazakhstan (-5.4% per year) and Russia (-13.0% per year).

Export Prices By Country

In 2022, the average chromates export price amounted to $1,869 per ton, increasing by 44% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was India ($2,665 per ton), while Kazakhstan ($1,329 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Russia (+2.3%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
