Moreover, cider, perry and mead consumption in China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest consumer, the UK (1.1B litres), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by the United States (1.1B litres), with a 7.8% share.

In value terms, China ($5.1B), Japan ($4.9B) and India ($3.2B) constituted the countries with the highest levels of market value in 2022, together accounting for 20% of the global market. The United States, the UK, Indonesia, Germany, Mexico, Pakistan, Brazil, South Korea and Italy lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 10%.

Global production peaked at 15B litres in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, cider, perry and mead production declined to $65.4B in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 12%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $70.1B. From 2014 to 2022, global production growth remained at a lower figure.
Production By Country
China (2.7B litres) remains the largest cider, perry and mead producing country worldwide, accounting for 19% of total volume. Moreover, cider, perry and mead production in China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, the United States (1B litres), threefold. India (1B litres) ranked third in terms of total production with a 7.2% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in China amounted to +1.3%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: the United States (+2.1% per year) and India (+4.4% per year).
Imports

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in supplies from abroad of cider, perry, mead and other fermented beverages, when their volume decreased by -6.3% to 1.2B litres. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, global imports hit record highs at 1.2B litres in 2021, and then declined in the following year.
In value terms, cider, perry and mead imports dropped to $1.8B in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 12% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $2B, and then reduced in the following year.
Imports By Country
In 2022, the UK (217M litres), distantly followed by the United States (106M litres) and Japan (70M litres) were the major importers of cider, perry, mead and other fermented beverages, together creating 34% of total imports. The following importers - Botswana (45M litres), Russia (41M litres), Germany (38M litres), the Czech Republic (37M litres), Australia (34M litres), Israel (29M litres), South Korea (28M litres), Spain (24M litres), the Netherlands (22M litres) and Canada (22M litres) - together made up 28% of total imports.
Imports into the UK increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Israel (+49.4%), South Korea (+17.0%), Botswana (+13.4%), the United States (+10.6%), the Netherlands (+9.0%), Spain (+6.6%), Russia (+6.2%), the Czech Republic (+5.9%) and Australia (+1.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Israel emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the world, with a CAGR of +49.4% from 2012-2022. Canada experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Germany (-1.1%) and Japan (-12.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of the United States, Botswana, Israel and South Korea increased by +5.3, +2.6, +2.4 and +1.8 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest cider, perry and mead importing markets worldwide were the United States ($268M), the UK ($263M) and Japan ($80M), with a combined 34% share of global imports. Russia, Canada, Australia, South Korea, Germany, Botswana, the Netherlands, Spain, the Czech Republic and Israel lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 24%.
