Coal Price in Pakistan (CIF) - 2022
In 2022, the average coal import price amounted to $143 per ton, with an increase of 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 66% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Australia ($186 per ton), while the price for Afghanistan ($109 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mozambique (+3.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Coal Price in Pakistan (FOB) - 2022
In 2022, the average coal export price amounted to $91 per ton, with a decrease of -23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the average export price increased by 70%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $157 per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Afghanistan ($230 per ton), while the average price for exports to Malaysia amounted to $89 per ton.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Slovakia (+50.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.
Coal Imports in Pakistan
In 2022, supplies from abroad of coal decreased by -15.9% to 16M tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Overall, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 14% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of 20M tons, and then reduced dramatically in the following year.
In value terms, coal imports stood at $2.4B in 2022. In general, imports, however, posted resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 90%. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was decline in shipments abroad of coal, when their volume decreased by -0.3% to 1.5K tons. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +12.7% over the period from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 23% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 1.5K tons, leveling off in the following year.
In value terms, coal exports contracted markedly to $136K in 2022. Overall, exports showed a pronounced decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 26% against the previous year.
