Moreover, contact lense production in Ireland exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Taiwan (Chinese) (1.5B units), threefold. Germany (1B units) ranked third in terms of total production with a 7.7% share.

The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 13% against the previous year. Global imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
Imports By Country
Japan represented the major importer of contact lenses in the world, with the volume of imports recording 4.1B units, which was near 32% of total imports in 2022. Germany (1.7B units) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 13% share, followed by China (9.9%), the United States (9.7%) and the UK (5.2%). At the same time, Hungary (+23.0%), China (+20.5%), South Korea (+16.2%), Germany (+12.8%), the United States (+8.2%), France (+6.5%), the Netherlands (+5.6%), Italy (+3.7%) and Taiwan (Chinese) (+2.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Hungary emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the world, with a CAGR of +23.0% from 2012-2022. By contrast, the UK (-2.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. China (+6.8 p.p.) and Germany (+5.1 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the global imports, while Japan and the UK saw its share reduced by -3.4% and -8.5% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Japan ($1.3B), the United States ($1.2B) and Germany ($550M) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 43% of global imports. China, the Netherlands, Italy, the UK, France, South Korea, Taiwan (Chinese) and Hungary lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 24%.
Among the main importing countries, China, with a CAGR of +19.4%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices By Country
The average contact lense import price stood at $0.6 per unit in 2022, which is down by -4.7% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a pronounced downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 8.5% against the previous year.
