Crude Oil Diesel

Crude oil diesel is a type of fuel that is derived from crude oil, a naturally occurring mixture of hydrocarbons found beneath the Earth's surface. Crude oil diesel is a middle distillate, meaning it is obtained between lighter petroleum products like gasoline and kerosene and heavier products like heavy fuel oil. It usually has a lower energy content than gasoline but higher energy content than kerosene.

One of the primary characteristics of crude oil diesel is its viscosity, or thickness. The viscosity of diesel fuel affects its flow characteristics and combustion efficiency. Diesel fuel with higher viscosity tends to have more abundant organic compounds and can provide better lubrication for diesel engines. On the other hand, low-viscosity diesel fuel flows more easily at lower temperatures.

Crude oil diesel also contains various chemical compounds, including sulfur, aromatic hydrocarbons, and trace amounts of impurities such as metals. The composition of diesel fuel can vary depending on the source of the crude oil and the refining processes used.

To ensure optimal performance and reduce environmental impact, crude oil diesel is often treated with additives during the refining process. These additives can improve certain properties of the fuel, such as its cetane number (a measure of combustion quality), lubricity, and stability.

This has led to the introduction of ultra-low sulfur diesel (ULSD), which contains only 15 parts per million (ppm) of sulfur compared to conventional diesel fuel with sulfur content of 500 ppm or higher.
