View PricingCrude Oil Market Closing Time
The crude oil market closing time refers to the time at which the trading session for crude oil futures contracts comes to an end for the day. This closing time is important for traders and investors as it marks the end of the active trading period for the commodity and helps provide a reference point for price levels when the market reopens the next day.
The crude oil market closing time varies depending on the exchange on which the futures contracts are being traded. The two most popular exchanges for trading crude oil futures are the New York Mercantile Exchange (NYMEX) and the Intercontinental Exchange (ICE).
New York Mercantile Exchange (NYMEX)
The NYMEX is a leading commodity futures exchange and is home to the West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil futures contract, which is considered the benchmark for oil prices in the United States. The trading hours for WTI futures on the NYMEX are as follows:
- Sunday to Friday: 6:00 PM to 5:00 PM (next day) Eastern Time (ET)
This means that the crude oil market on the NYMEX is open for trading from Sunday evening to Friday afternoon, with a one-hour break each day between 5:00 PM and 6:00 PM ET. The market officially closes at 5:00 PM ET on Friday and reopens at 6:00 PM ET on Sunday.
Intercontinental Exchange (ICE)
The ICE is another major exchange that offers crude oil futures contracts. The Brent crude oil futures contract, which is used as a global benchmark for oil prices, is traded on the ICE. The trading hours for Brent futures on the ICE are as follows:
- Sunday to Friday: 7:00 PM to 5:00 PM (next day) London Time (GMT)
These trading hours mean that the crude oil market on the ICE is open for trading from Sunday evening to Friday afternoon, with a one-hour break each day between 6:00 PM and 7:00 PM GMT. The market officially closes at 5:00 PM GMT on Friday and reopens at 7:00 PM GMT on Sunday.
It is important to note that while the trading hours for crude oil futures contracts may vary slightly between different exchanges, the general pattern is that the market is open for trading for most of the week but closes for a short period each day for maintenance and to allow for settlement of trades.
