View PricingCrude Oil Price Chart 15 Years
Crude oil prices have experienced significant fluctuations over the past 15 years. Starting in 2006, the price of crude oil began a gradual ascent, reaching an all-time high in mid-2008. However, this was followed by a sharp decline due to the global financial crisis. Subsequently, the price recovered but remained relatively volatile until 2014 when it began a downward trend.
In 2006, the average price of crude oil was around $61 per barrel. This increased steadily over the next few years, reaching a peak of $147 per barrel in July 2008. The sharp increase was driven by geopolitical tensions, supply concerns, and increasing global demand. However, the global financial crisis in late 2008 led to a rapid decline in oil prices. By the end of the year, crude oil was trading at around $44 per barrel.
Over the next few years, the price of oil continued to increase, fueled by economic recovery and growing demand from emerging economies. By 2011, the average price of crude oil had climbed to over $100 per barrel. However, concerns about oversupply and a slowdown in global economic growth led to a decline in prices in 2014.
In mid-2014, a significant shift occurred in the crude oil market. The price of oil started to decline, eventually reaching a low of around $40 per barrel in early 2016. This was primarily driven by a combination of oversupply and weakening demand. The oversupply was a result of increased production from non-OPEC countries, particularly the United States, and OPEC's decision not to cut production levels.
Despite attempts by OPEC to stabilize prices by reducing production, prices remained relatively low. In late 2016, OPEC and non-OPEC countries reached an agreement to cut production, leading to a gradual increase in oil prices over the next few years. By the end of 2018, the average price of crude oil had reached around $70 per barrel.
However, in 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic had a significant impact on oil prices. With global lockdowns and travel restrictions, demand plummeted, resulting in a historic drop in oil prices. In April 2020, crude oil prices briefly turned negative, with futures contracts trading at minus $40 per barrel.
Since then, as global economies have started to recover and demand has picked up, crude oil prices have slowly rebounded. As of the most recent data, the average price of crude oil is around $65 per barrel.
