Cucumber and Gherkin Price in Turkey (FOB) - 2023

In July 2023, the average cucumber and gherkin export price amounted to $1,047 per ton, with an increase of 2.4% against the previous month. Over the period under review, export price indicated a modest expansion from September 2022 to July 2023: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +1.9% over the last ten months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on July 2023 figures, cucumber and gherkin export price increased by +104.0% against May 2023 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in June 2023 an increase of 99% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs in July 2023.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In July 2023, the country with the highest price was Germany ($1,362 per ton), while the average price for exports to Poland ($499 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From September 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Bulgaria (+2.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average cucumber and gherkin import price amounted to $938 per ton, with a decrease of -13.5% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, enjoyed a mild increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average import price increased by 56% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $1,084 per ton in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Sweden ($1,266 per ton), while the price for Cyprus ($772 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belarus (+41.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Cucumber and Gherkin Exports in Turkey

For the fourth year in a row, Turkey recorded growth in overseas shipments of cucumbers and gherkins, which increased by 15% to 107K tons in 2022. Overall, total exports indicated significant growth from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +25.1% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +95.9% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 32% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, cucumber and gherkin exports rose notably to $71M in 2022. In general, total exports indicated a significant increase from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +24.7% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +94.1% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 38%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

After two years of decline, purchases abroad of cucumbers and gherkins increased by 706% to 87 tons in 2022. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt decline.
