Domestic Oil Production by Month

In recent years, domestic oil production in the United States has experienced significant fluctuations on a monthly basis. Factors such as global oil prices, technological advancements, and government policies have all played a role in shaping the trends in oil production.

Starting from January 2011, domestic oil production has followed an overall upward trajectory, with some intermittent declines. In January 2011, the United States produced approximately 5.5 million barrels of oil per day (b/d). This figure steadily increased over the next few years, reaching a peak of around 9.6 million b/d in April 2015. This surge in production can be attributed to the advancement of hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling techniques, which unlocked previously inaccessible shale oil reserves.

However, following this peak, a decline in domestic oil production was observed. From mid-2015 to mid-2016, production levels decreased due to a decline in global oil prices. Many shale operators faced financial difficulties and reduced their drilling activities as a result. By May 2016, domestic oil production had fallen to approximately 8.7 million b/d.

The following years saw a rebound in oil production, reaching new highs in November 2018 when the United States produced about 11.3 million b/d. This growth was driven by a combination of factors such as favorable market conditions, technological advancements, and increased investment in shale oil fields.

In more recent times, the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent economic slowdown had a significant impact on domestic oil production. As global oil demand plummeted, oil prices experienced a sharp decline in early 2020. This led to a decrease in drilling activities, resulting in a drop in domestic oil production. By May 2020, production levels had fallen to around 11.0 million b/d.

The months following May 2020 saw a gradual recovery in oil production as demand started to pick up. However, the pace of recovery remained uncertain due to ongoing challenges posed by the pandemic. By December 2020, the United States was producing approximately 11.1 million b/d of oil.

In summary, domestic oil production in the United States has shown significant volatility on a month-to-month basis. While production levels have experienced fluctuations due to various factors, the overall trend has been one of growth, thanks to advancements in technology and the abundance of shale oil reserves.
