Drink sweeteners are additives that are used to enhance the taste of beverages by providing sweetness. They are commonly used as alternatives to sugar, as they can provide a similar level of sweetness without the added calories. There are several types of drink sweeteners available on the market, each with its own unique properties and uses.
1. Artificial Sweeteners:
Artificial sweeteners are synthetic compounds that are intensely sweet but have little to no calories. They are commonly used in diet and sugar-free drinks, as well as other food products. Some of the most popular artificial sweeteners include:
- Aspartame: This sweetener is commonly found in low-calorie soft drinks and sugar-free desserts. It is about 200 times sweeter than sugar and does not have a bitter aftertaste.
- Sucralose: Sucralose is a zero-calorie sweetener that is often used in diet beverages and sugar-free foods. It is approximately 600 times sweeter than sugar and is heat-stable, making it suitable for cooking and baking.
- Saccharin: Saccharin is one of the oldest artificial sweeteners and is commonly used in tabletop sweeteners. It is about 300-500 times sweeter than sugar but has a slight bitter aftertaste.
2. Natural Sweeteners:
Natural sweeteners are derived from plants and may contain some calories but are generally considered healthier alternatives to sugar. Some popular natural sweeteners used in beverages include:
- Stevia: Stevia is a plant-based sweetener that is derived from the leaves of the Stevia rebaudiana plant. It is intensely sweet but has zero calories. Stevia is often used in natural and low-calorie beverages.
- Monk Fruit Extract: Monk fruit extract is another natural sweetener that is derived from the monk fruit. It is significantly sweeter than sugar but contains no calories. Monk fruit extract is commonly used in low-calorie drinks and sugar-free foods.
3. Sugar Alcohols:
Sugar alcohols are carbohydrates that occur naturally in certain fruits and vegetables. They have a similar sweetness to sugar but provide fewer calories. Sugar alcohols are commonly used in sugar-free beverages and chewing gums. Some examples of sugar alcohols include:
- Erythritol: Erythritol is a sugar alcohol that is derived from corn. It has about 70% of the sweetness of sugar but only provides 0.2 calories per gram.
- Xylitol: Xylitol is another sugar alcohol that is found in many fruits and vegetables. It has a sweetness similar to sugar and provides about 2.4 calories per gram.
It's important to note that while drink sweeteners can provide a calorie-free or lower calorie alternative to sugar, they may have different effects on blood sugar levels and overall health. Some people may also experience digestive issues or side effects from consuming large amounts of certain sweeteners. It is always recommended to consume sweeteners in moderation and consult with a healthcare professional if you have specific dietary concerns or health conditions.

This year, world sugar production is expected to rise by 3% to 193M tons. The growth will be encouraged by favorable weather conditions in most of the largest producing countries, as well as the providing exemptions on the neonicotinoid usage against plant diseases and blights in France, Germany and the UK. The drop in sugar production and shipments from Brazil will be offset by large volumes coming from Thailand, which will boost global exports by +2.6% y-o-y. The increased supply in the world market is to keep sugar prices relatively stable over the next two years.
