The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were China (5.7M tons), South Africa (4.2M tons) and Kazakhstan (1.6M tons), with a combined 78% share of global production. India, Finland, Russia and Zimbabwe lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 14%.

World Imports of Ferro-Chromium

In 2022, global imports of ferro-chromium shrank to 6.2M tons, reducing by -11.1% compared with the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded modest growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 13%. As a result, imports reached the peak of 6.9M tons, and then fell in the following year.

In value terms, ferro-chromium imports expanded remarkably to $10.2B in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated perceptible growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +70.8% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 52%. Over the period under review, global imports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Imports By Country

China represented the key importing country with an import of around 2.4M tons, which reached 39% of total imports. Japan (649K tons) held an 11% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by the United States (9.8%), Indonesia (9.1%), South Korea (5.4%) and Belgium (5.1%). The following importers - the Netherlands (269K tons), Spain (151K tons), Germany (137K tons), Taiwan (Chinese) (127K tons) and Sweden (97K tons) - together made up 13% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to ferro-chromium imports into China stood at +4.6%. At the same time, Indonesia (+16.5%), the Netherlands (+13.9%), Sweden (+5.4%), the United States (+1.9%) and Belgium (+1.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Indonesia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the world, with a CAGR of +16.5% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Japan (-1.3%), Spain (-1.8%), South Korea (-4.4%), Taiwan (Chinese) (-7.4%) and Germany (-10.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. China (+12 p.p.), Indonesia (+6.9 p.p.) and the Netherlands (+3.1 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the global imports, while Japan, Taiwan (Chinese), South Korea and Germany saw its share reduced by -2.7%, -2.8%, -3.9% and -5% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, ferro-chromium exports soared to $10.9B in 2022. Overall, total exports indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +76.7% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 53% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the global exports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
