Fig Price in Malaysia (CIF) - 2021
The average fig import price stood at $4,665 per ton in December 2021, which is down by -5.1% against the previous month. Overall, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in July 2021 when the average import price increased by 70% month-to-month. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $6,604 per ton in September 2021; however, from October 2021 to December 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In December 2021, the country with the highest price was Peru ($10,017 per ton), while the price for Turkey ($4,012 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From December 2020 to December 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+5.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average fig export price amounted to $4,835 per ton, jumping by 49% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a pronounced reduction. The export price peaked at $7,253 per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Macao SAR ($10,051 per ton), while the average price for exports to Singapore ($3,756 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Vietnam (+17.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
Fig Imports in Malaysia
In 2022, overseas purchases of figs decreased by -17.3% to 462 tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Overall, total imports indicated a buoyant increase from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +8.8% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +28.8% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 53% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of 558 tons, and then declined remarkably in the following year.
In value terms, fig imports dropped to $2M in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +7.1% from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 36% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $2.3M, and then shrank in the following year.
