Fructose Price in Costa Rica (CIF) - 2022
The average fructose import price stood at $966 per ton in 2022, with an increase of 18% against the previous year. Overall, import price indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, fructose import price increased by +28.7% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the average import price increased by 33% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $1,273 per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($1,462 per ton), while the price for Turkey ($667 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United States (+7.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
Fructose Price in Costa Rica (FOB) - 2022
The average fructose export price stood at $1,668 per ton in 2022, dropping by -14.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, posted mild growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the average export price increased by 70%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $1,946 per ton, and then contracted in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Dominican Republic ($3,430 per ton), while the average price for exports to the United States ($634 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to China (+48.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Fructose Imports in Costa Rica
In 2022, supplies from abroad of fructose and fructose syrup decreased by -16.7% to 7.2K tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 19%. As a result, imports attained the peak of 8.6K tons, and then contracted significantly in the following year.
In value terms, fructose imports dropped modestly to $7M in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +5.5% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 30% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $7.1M, and then fell modestly in the following year.

Fructose Exports in Costa Rica
In 2022, exports of fructose and fructose syrup from Costa Rica totaled 155 tons, picking up by 8.7% on the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a precipitous contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 21%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 1.8K tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, fructose exports reduced to $259K in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded a sharp curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 93%.
