Herbicide Price in South Africa (CIF) - 2023
The average herbicide import price stood at $4,860 per ton in July 2023, reducing by -42.8% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price saw a perceptible decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in June 2023 when the average import price increased by 38% month-to-month. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $8,493 per ton, and then contracted remarkably in the following month.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was France ($22,497 per ton), while the price for Australia ($813 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+5.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
Herbicide Price in South Africa (FOB) - 2022
The average herbicide export price stood at $6,183 per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -10.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a slight decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 28% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $6,920 per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Zimbabwe ($11,155 per ton), while the average price for exports to Kenya ($1,909 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Swaziland (+5.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Herbicide Imports in South Africa
In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of herbicides, when their volume decreased by -36.5% to 55K tons. Over the period under review, imports recorded a abrupt descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 9.5%.
In value terms, herbicide imports declined dramatically to $357M in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the period from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 23%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $431M, and then fell rapidly in the following year.
