Historical COMEX copper prices have shown significant fluctuations over the past several decades. Copper, being a widely used industrial metal, has experienced price volatility influenced by various factors such as global economic conditions, supply and demand dynamics, geopolitical events, and speculative trading activities.
During the 1970s, copper prices experienced a sharp rise due to increased global demand, particularly from emerging economies like China. The average price per pound of copper on the COMEX exchange increased from around $0.50 in the early 1970s to over $1.30 by the end of the decade.
In the early 1980s, copper prices collapsed, primarily due to a global economic recession and an oversupply of copper on the market. The average price per pound dropped to around $0.60 by the mid-1980s.
From the late 1980s to the mid-1990s, copper prices remained relatively stable, trading in the range of $0.70 to $0.90 per pound. However, in the late 1990s, copper prices started to rise again due to increased demand from emerging economies and supply constraints. By the early 2000s, the average price per pound reached over $1.50.
The early to mid-2000s witnessed a period of high copper prices, driven by strong demand from China's rapid industrialization and infrastructure development. The average price per pound soared to over $4.00 by mid-2008, before abruptly declining during the global financial crisis.
Following the financial crisis, copper prices rebounded and reached new highs in 2011, with the average price per pound exceeding $4.50. However, prices retreated in subsequent years due to concerns about China's economic slowdown and a global oversupply of copper. Prices fluctuated between $2.00 and $3.50 per pound from 2013 to 2016.
In recent years, copper prices have shown volatility influenced by trade tensions between the United States and China, global economic growth prospects, and geopolitical uncertainties. The average price per pound ranged from around $2.50 to $3.50 between 2017 and 2020.
It's important to note that the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 had a significant impact on copper prices. Prices initially declined due to reduced global demand and disruptions in supply chains. However, prices rebounded swiftly as economic activities resumed and stimulus measures were implemented by governments worldwide.
Overall, historical COMEX copper prices have demonstrated substantial volatility, reflecting the interplay of numerous factors shaping the global copper market.
