The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the production volume increased by 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, global production attained the maximum volume at 43K tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, hydantoin production rose notably to $246M in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, showed a noticeable decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the production volume increased by 21% against the previous year. Over the period under review, global production reached the maximum level at $330M in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Production By Country

China (22K tons) remains the largest hydantoin producing country worldwide, comprising approx. 55% of total volume. Moreover, hydantoin production in China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, India (4.8K tons), fivefold. The United States (3K tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 7.5% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in China totaled +5.1%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: India (+3.3% per year) and the United States (-6.4% per year).

Imports

World Imports of Hydantoin And Its Derivatives

In 2022, supplies from abroad of hydantoin and its derivatives decreased by -4.2% to 21K tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a slight reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 9.1% against the previous year. Global imports peaked at 25K tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, hydantoin imports amounted to $132M in 2022. In general, imports recorded a noticeable downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 11% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $202M. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of global imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports By Country

Spain (4.7K tons) and the United States (3.3K tons) were the largest importers of hydantoin and its derivatives in 2022, recording approx. 22% and 15% of total imports, respectively. Brazil (1.2K tons) held a 5.5% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Germany (5.2%), Belgium (5.1%), Japan (5.1%) and India (4.6%). The average hydantoin import price stood at $6,156 per ton in 2022, picking up by 6.8% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a perceptible setback. After five years of growth, overseas shipments of hydantoin and its derivatives decreased by -10.9% to 18K tons in 2022. In general, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 12%. The global exports peaked at 20K tons in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

In value terms, hydantoin exports totaled $99M in 2022. Overall, exports continue to indicate a pronounced contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the global exports hit record highs at $155M in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports By Country

China prevails in exports structure, amounting to 9.3K tons, which was near 53% of total exports in 2022. The United States (1.4K tons) held an 8.2% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Belgium (6.3%), India (5.4%) and Indonesia (5.2%). Spain (727 tons), Germany (663 tons), the Netherlands (424 tons), Israel (405 tons), Italy (286 tons) and Canada (279 tons) held a minor share of total exports.

Exports from China increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Indonesia (+59.7%), the Netherlands (+10.8%), Germany (+4.0%) and Italy (+3.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Indonesia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +59.7% from 2012-2022. Canada experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Spain (-2.4%), Belgium (-3.8%), India (-4.9%), the United States (-7.7%) and Israel (-8.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. China (+18 p.p.), Indonesia (+5.2 p.p.) and the Netherlands (+1.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the global exports, while Belgium, Israel, India and the United States saw its share reduced by -2.9%, -3.4%, -3.5% and -9.9% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($44M) remains the largest hydantoin supplier worldwide, comprising 44% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United States ($9.9M), with a 10% share of global exports. It was followed by Belgium, with a 5.5% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in China totaled +6.5%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United States (-6.6% per year) and Belgium (-10.9% per year).

Export Prices By Country

In 2022, the average hydantoin export price amounted to $5,645 per ton, surging by 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a pronounced reduction. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $8,658 per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($14,648 per ton), while Indonesia ($2,510 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
