Indian Coal Company, often referred to as Coal India Limited (CIL), is a state-controlled coal mining company in India. CIL is headquartered in Kolkata, West Bengal, and is the largest coal producer company in the world. It was formed in November 1975 as a public-sector undertaking under the Ministry of Coal, Government of India.
CIL is responsible for the exploration, production, and marketing of coal and coal-related products. The company operates through its subsidiaries and has a significant presence in all major coalfields across eight states in India, including Jharkhand, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh, Telangana, Maharashtra, and Uttar Pradesh.
As of March 2021, CIL has seven wholly-owned coal-producing subsidiary companies and one consultancy company. These subsidiaries are Western Coalfields Limited, South Eastern Coalfields Limited, Northern Coalfields Limited, Central Coalfields Limited, Mahanadi Coalfields Limited, Eastern Coalfields Limited, and Bharat Coking Coal Limited. CIL also has a joint venture subsidiary called International Coal Ventures Private Limited.
CIL's primary objective is to satisfy the coal demand in India for various sectors like power generation, steel, cement, and other industries. The company produces different types of coal, including coking coal, non-coking coal, semi-coking coal, and washed and beneficiated coal. CIL's operations cover underground and open-cast mining methods.
CIL has a robust infrastructure to support its mining operations, including coal mines, coal washeries, coal handling plants, and coal depots. The company has a strong workforce consisting of thousands of employees, including coal miners, engineers, managers, and administrative staff.
In recent years, CIL has faced challenges due to environmental concerns, labor disputes, and declining coal demand. However, the company has taken initiatives to improve efficiency, increase productivity, and diversify its operations into renewable energy sources like solar and wind power.
Despite the challenges, CIL continues to play a crucial role in India's energy sector and contributes significantly to the country's economic growth. It aims to achieve sustainable and responsible coal mining practices while meeting the energy needs of the nation.
