Lab-grown meat, also known as cultivated meat, is a relatively new technology that has been gaining attention in recent years. The idea behind it is to grow meat in a lab rather than raising and slaughtering animals for their meat. This technology offers several advantages such as reducing the environmental impact of meat production, reducing the spread of diseases associated with animal agriculture, and reducing the ethical concerns of animal welfare.
One of the most commonly asked questions about lab-grown meat is how much it will cost. At its current stage, lab-grown meat is quite expensive due to the complexity and high cost of production. However, many experts predict that the cost will decrease significantly as the technology advances and production processes become more efficient.
In 2013, the first lab-grown beef burger was cooked and presented to the public at a cost of $330,000. The high cost was mainly due to the use of expensive growth media, which provides the necessary nutrients for the cells to grow. Since then, the cost of producing lab-grown meat has decreased considerably. In 2019, a Singaporean company called Shiok Meats announced that it had produced shrimp meat in a lab at a cost of $5,000 per kilogram.
Despite the significant decrease in production costs, lab-grown meat is still more expensive than conventionally produced meat. For example, a quarter-pound Beyond Burger, which is made from plant-based ingredients, costs around $2.99 at most grocery stores. In contrast, a quarter-pound of lab-grown meat is estimated to cost around $11.36.
However, proponents of lab-grown meat argue that as production processes become more efficient, the cost will continue to decrease and eventually become cheaper than conventionally produced meat. In 2020, an article published in the journal Frontiers in Sustainable Food Systems estimated that the cost of producing lab-grown meat could come down to $5.66 per 100 grams (3.5 ounces) by 2030.
While the price of lab-grown meat is not yet competitive with conventionally produced meat, it is important to note that it is still a relatively new technology. As with any new technology, it takes time and investment for production processes to become more efficient, and for prices to come down.
In conclusion, the price of lab-grown meat is currently high, but many experts predict that it will become more affordable as technology advances and production processes become more efficient. Although it may take some time, lab-grown meat has the potential to significantly reduce the environmental impact of meat production and offer a more ethical and sustainable alternative to conventionally produced meat.
