In October 2023, the average lactose import price amounted to $1,970 per ton, waning by -15.1% against the previous month. Overall, the import price showed a noticeable slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in July 2023 an increase of 28% month-to-month. The import price peaked at $2,954 per ton in October 2022; however, from November 2022 to October 2023, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In October 2023, the country with the highest price was Germany ($4,968 per ton), while the price for the United States ($1,036 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From October 2022 to October 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by New Zealand (+3.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
Lactose Price in Brazil (FOB) - 2022
The average lactose export price stood at $3,634 per ton in 2022, which is down by -30.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a abrupt setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the average export price increased by 616%. The export price peaked at $21,099 per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Argentina ($18,368 per ton), while the average price for exports to Cyprus ($516 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to South Korea (+140.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Lactose Imports in Brazil
In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of lactose and lactose syrup, when their volume decreased by -10.7% to 19K tons. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 20%.
In value terms, lactose imports amounted to $42M in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +17.4% over the last three-year period.
