Large cashews are the bigger-sized cashew nuts compared to the average-sized cashews. Cashew nuts are the seeds of the cashew tree, scientifically known as Anacardium occidentale. The tree is native to Brazil but is now cultivated in various tropical regions around the world.
Cashew nuts are generally categorized based on their size, and large cashews refer to those that fall into the larger size range. The size of cashews is determined by the number of nuts per pound. Large cashews typically have a count of around 180-210 per pound, indicating their relatively larger size compared to smaller cashews that may have a count of around 240-320 per pound.
Large cashews have several distinguishing characteristics. They have a distinct kidney or bean shape with a smooth, slightly curved surface. The outer shell of the cashew is hard and durable, protecting the inner seed from damage. The shell contains a toxic resin, known as urushiol, which can cause skin irritations and is similar to the resin found in poison ivy.
Once the cashews are harvested, they undergo a multi-step process to make them safe for consumption. The outer shell is removed, and the cashew nut undergoes a roasting process to eliminate any remaining toxic resin. This process also enhances the flavor of the cashew and gives it a characteristic golden color.
Large cashews are packed with nutrients and offer various health benefits. They are an excellent source of healthy monounsaturated fats, which are beneficial for heart health. These nuts also provide a good amount of dietary fiber, protein, vitamins, and minerals. Cashews are rich in copper, phosphorus, manganese, magnesium, and zinc, all of which play essential roles in maintaining overall health.
Large cashews have a naturally buttery and mildly sweet flavor. They are versatile and can be enjoyed in various ways. Cashews are commonly used in both sweet and savory dishes, adding a unique creamy texture and flavor. They are often used in cooking, baking, or as an ingredient in nut butters, trail mixes, and granolas.
In addition to their culinary uses, cashews are also popular as a standalone snack. The large size of cashews makes them particularly satisfying to eat, and their nutritional profile makes them a wholesome snack choice. They can be enjoyed as a quick and convenient snack on their own or paired with other dried fruits and nuts for a nourishing trail mix.
Large cashews are widely available in grocery stores, specialty food stores, and online retailers. They can be purchased raw, roasted, salted, or flavored, providing options to suit different taste preferences. When buying large cashews, it is essential to select those that are fresh, have a crisp texture, and are free from any signs of rancidity or mold.
