Liquefied Propane Price in the Netherlands (CIF) - 2023

In August 2023, the average liquefied propane import price amounted to $505 per ton, picking up by 7.9% against the previous month. Overall, the import price, however, showed a slight slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in November 2022 when the average import price increased by 8.9% month-to-month. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $633 per ton in August 2022; however, from September 2022 to August 2023, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In August 2023, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($579 per ton), while the price for the United States ($492 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Norway (-1.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.

In August 2023, the average liquefied propane export price amounted to $713 per ton, with an increase of 14% against the previous month. In general, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in November 2022 an increase of 20% m-o-m. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $925 per ton. From December 2022 to August 2023, the the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In August 2023, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($1,095 per ton), while the average price for exports to the UK ($596 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Belgium (+4.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Liquefied Propane Imports in the Netherlands

In 2022, purchases abroad of liquefied propanes decreased by -9.7% to 2.2M tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. In general, imports showed a perceptible contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 10% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of 2.6M tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, liquefied propane imports shrank modestly to $1.5B in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a strong expansion from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +14.6% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +68.5% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 70%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $1.5B, leveling off in the following year.

Liquefied Propane Exports in the Netherlands

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of liquefied propanes, when their volume decreased by -15.6% to 801K tons. Over the period under review, exports showed a pronounced descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 1.5%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 948K tons, and then contracted significantly in the following year.

In value terms, liquefied propane exports amounted to $652M in 2022. In general, total exports indicated a prominent expansion from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +17.1% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +77.7% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 65%. The exports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
