Live Fish Price in Bulgaria (FOB) - 2023

The average live fish export price stood at $4,421 per ton in June 2023, waning by -6.4% against the previous month. Over the period from June 2022 to June 2023, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.9%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in November 2022 an increase of 23% m-o-m. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $5,281 per ton in April 2023; however, from May 2023 to June 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In June 2023, the country with the highest price was Romania ($4,524 per ton), while the average price for exports to Serbia stood at $2,497 per ton.

From June 2022 to June 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Romania (+1.9%).

The average live fish import price stood at $10,656 per ton in June 2023, which is down by -10.8% against the previous month. Overall, the import price, however, showed a moderate increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in November 2022 an increase of 59% month-to-month. The import price peaked at $12,699 per ton in April 2023; however, from May 2023 to June 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In June 2023, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($11,534 per ton), while the price for Denmark ($9,865 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From June 2022 to June 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Greece (+9.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Live Fish Exports in Bulgaria

In 2022, approx. 982 tons of live fish were exported from Bulgaria; which is down by -21.9% against the previous year. Overall, exports continue to indicate a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 1.7% against the previous year.

In value terms, live fish exports shrank slightly to $4M in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 12%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $4.2M, and then reduced modestly in the following year.

In value terms, live fish imports skyrocketed to $3.7M in 2022. In general, imports showed a significant increase. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
