Maize Bran Price in South Africa (CIF) - 2023
In July 2023, the average maize bran import price amounted to $165 per ton, surging by 16% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $180 per ton in November 2022; however, from December 2022 to July 2023, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In July 2023, the country with the highest price was China ($488 per ton), while the price for Malawi ($73.0 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mozambique (+0.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
Maize Bran Price in South Africa (FOB) - 2023
In July 2023, the average maize bran export price amounted to $177 per ton, increasing by 1.8% against the previous month. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a perceptible contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in December 2022 an increase of 97% m-o-m. The export price peaked at $1,106 per ton in February 2023; however, from March 2023 to July 2023, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Lesotho ($385 per ton), while the average price for exports to Botswana ($165 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Lesotho (+3.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
Maize Bran Imports in South Africa
For the fourth year in a row, South Africa recorded growth in overseas purchases of maize bran, which increased by 66% to 157K tons in 2022. Overall, imports enjoyed a significant expansion. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Maize Bran Exports in South Africa
For the third consecutive year, South Africa recorded decline in overseas shipments of maize bran, which decreased by -76.1% to 524 tons in 2022. In general, exports showed a sharp contraction. The smallest decline of -72.1% was in 2021.
In value terms, maize bran exports fell significantly to $127K in 2022. Over the period under review, exports saw a precipitous contraction. The smallest decline of -64.1% was in 2021.
