Maize Price in Bulgaria (FOB) - 2022
The average maize export price stood at $342 per ton in 2022, growing by 28% against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, maize export price increased by +90.2% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the average export price increased by 39% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Average prices varied somewhat for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the countries with the highest prices were Romania ($370 per ton) and Libya ($366 per ton), while the average price for exports to South Korea ($263 per ton) and China ($289 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the UK (+6.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Maize Price in Bulgaria (CIF) - 2022
In 2022, the average maize import price amounted to $923 per ton, picking up by 11% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 167% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $1,295 per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was France ($3,572 per ton), while the price for Serbia ($257 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Hungary (+7.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Maize Exports in Bulgaria
In 2022, overseas shipments of maize decreased by -45.3% to 962K tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. In general, exports saw a dramatic curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 0.2% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 2.6M tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, maize exports reduced markedly to $329M in 2022. Overall, exports continue to indicate a abrupt curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 7.1% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $499M. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Maize Imports in Bulgaria
For the fourth consecutive year, Bulgaria recorded growth in purchases abroad of maize, which increased by 14% to 100K tons in 2022. In general, imports saw a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 104% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.
In value terms, maize imports skyrocketed to $93M in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated significant growth from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +22.7% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +84.9% against 2019 indices.
