Margarine and Shortening Price in Guatemala (FOB) - 2023
In October 2023, the average margarine and shortening export price amounted to $1,733 per ton, surging by 3.9% against the previous month. In general, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $1,805 per ton in October 2022; however, from November 2022 to October 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied somewhat for the major export markets. In October 2023, the highest price was recorded for prices to Nicaragua ($2,066 per ton) and Costa Rica ($1,997 per ton), while the average price for exports to Mexico ($1,419 per ton) and the United States ($1,510 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From October 2022 to October 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Nicaragua (+0.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.
Margarine and Shortening Price in Guatemala (CIF) - 2023
In October 2023, the average margarine and shortening import price amounted to $1,775 per ton, flattening at the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a pronounced contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in May 2023 an increase of 3.4% m-o-m. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $2,432 per ton in October 2022; however, from November 2022 to October 2023, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In October 2023, the country with the highest price was the United States ($3,785 per ton), while the price for Honduras ($1,232 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From October 2022 to October 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Colombia (+1.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
Margarine and Shortening Exports in Guatemala
For the fourth year in a row, Guatemala recorded growth in shipments abroad of margarine and shortening, which increased by 22% to 50K tons in 2022. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 48% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, margarine and shortening exports soared to $86M in 2022. In general, exports recorded a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 90%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Margarine and Shortening Imports in Guatemala
In 2022, supplies from abroad of margarine and shortening decreased by -16.4% to 13K tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Over the period under review, imports recorded a pronounced curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 30% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of 18K tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, margarine and shortening imports totaled $29M in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated strong growth from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +16.8% over the last three years.
