Meat and Poultry Price in Japan (CIF) - 2022
The average meat and poultry import price stood at $4,570 per ton in 2022, leveling off at the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a slight downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the average import price increased by 3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $5,328 per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Australia ($6,986 per ton), while the price for Brazil ($2,608 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Australia (+3.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
Meat and Poultry Price in Japan (FOB) - 2022
The average meat and poultry export price stood at $33,662 per ton in 2022, waning by -3.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a resilient increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 84% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $34,929 per ton, and then reduced in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($63,812 per ton), while the average price for exports to Hong Kong SAR ($15,081 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Vietnam (+27.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Meat and Poultry Imports in Japan
In 2022, the amount of meat and poultry imported into Japan totaled 2.1M tons, approximately mirroring the previous year. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 2.7%.
In value terms, meat and poultry imports stood at $9.8B in 2022. Overall, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 5.2%. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Meat and Poultry Exports in Japan
In 2022, overseas shipments of meat and poultry decreased by -17.5% to 12K tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. In general, exports saw a abrupt shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 11% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 16K tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, meat and poultry exports contracted markedly to $413M in 2022. Overall, total exports indicated strong growth from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +11.4% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +38.2% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 70%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $519M, and then contracted notably in the following year.
