Melon Price in Kenya (FOB) - 2022
The average melon export price stood at $1,891 per ton in 2022, falling by -15.2% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a measured increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the average export price increased by 101% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $2,529 per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($3,317 per ton), while the average price for exports to Democratic Republic of the Congo ($421 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Uganda (+17.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Melon Price in Kenya (CIF) - 2022
The average melon import price stood at $710 per ton in 2022, dropping by -23.7% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, enjoyed a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 156% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $1,431 per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($8,810 per ton), while the price for Uganda ($190 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2013 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (+26.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
Melon Exports in Kenya
In 2022, the amount of melons exported from Kenya rose slightly to 10 tons, increasing by 3.5% against 2021. Over the period under review, exports showed significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 60%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, melon exports fell to $20K in 2022. In general, exports saw significant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 68%.
