Methanol Price in Thailand (CIF) - 2022
The average methanol import price stood at $407 per ton in 2022, surging by 2.4% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 159%. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $446 per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the highest price was recorded for prices from Oman ($414 per ton) and Qatar ($413 per ton), while the price for Indonesia ($359 per ton) and Brunei Darussalam ($380 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Bahrain (+7.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Methanol Price in Thailand (FOB) - 2022
The average methanol export price stood at $592 per ton in 2022, rising by 7.3% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, faced a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 216%. The export price peaked at $2,787 per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was India ($1,477 per ton), while the average price for exports to Cambodia ($446 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Lao People's Democratic Republic (-4.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
Methanol Imports in Thailand
After three years of growth, supplies from abroad of methanol (methyl alcohol) decreased by -8% to 754K tons in 2022. In general, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 3.2%. As a result, imports attained the peak of 819K tons, and then dropped in the following year.
In value terms, methanol imports reduced to $307M in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a buoyant increase from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +10.2% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +57.7% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 67%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $325M, and then declined in the following year.
