In 2022, the average mica; powder import price amounted to $938 per ton, growing by 19% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a slight curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 35% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $1,120 per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($1,304 per ton), while the price for Kenya ($572 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Turkey (+24.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
Mica; Powder Imports in Ethiopia
In 2022, supplies from abroad of mica; powders decreased by -12.4% to 156 tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a strong expansion from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +13.7% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -20.0% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 84%. As a result, imports reached the peak of 195 tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, mica; powder imports rose slightly to $146K in 2022. Overall, imports, however, showed significant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 115% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
