In 2022, after two years of growth, there was decline in supplies from abroad of chainsaws with a self-contained non-electric motor, when their volume decreased by -3.3% to 15M units. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +76.0% against 2015 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 25% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of 16M units, and then dropped slightly in the following year.

In value terms, non-electric chainsaw imports fell to $1.5B in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 24%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $1.6B, and then dropped in the following year.

Imports By Country

In 2022, India (2.7M units), distantly followed by the United States (1,169K units), Russia (947K units) and France (717K units) were the largest importers of chainsaws with a self-contained non-electric motor, together mixing up 36% of total imports. Germany (598K units), Brazil (466K units), Italy (461K units), Mexico (433K units), Poland (418K units), Ukraine (386K units), Spain (371K units), Argentina (369K units) and the UK (321K units) took a minor share of total imports.

In value terms, the largest non-electric chainsaw importing markets worldwide were the United States ($198M), France ($104M) and Germany ($86M), together accounting for 25% of global imports. Italy, Poland, Russia, Mexico, Spain, Brazil, the UK, India, Argentina and Ukraine lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 25%.

India, with a CAGR of +16.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of chainsaws with a self-contained non-electric motor, when their volume decreased by -14.4% to 13M units. In general, exports, however, posted a mild increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by 72%. The global exports peaked at 15M units in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, non-electric chainsaw exports reduced to $1.1B in 2022. Over the period under review, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 28%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $1.2B, and then contracted in the following year.

Exports By Country

China dominates exports structure, accounting for 10M units, which was approx. 80% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Sweden (681K units), mixing up a 5.2% share of total exports. The following exporters - the United States (443K units), Brazil (381K units) and Japan (226K units) - together made up 8.1% of total exports.

Exports from China increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Brazil (+7.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Brazil emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +7.2% from 2012-2022. Sweden and Japan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, the United States (-12.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of China increased by +15 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($571M) remains the largest non-electric chainsaw supplier worldwide, comprising 53% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Sweden ($197M), with an 18% share of global exports. It was followed by Brazil, with a 9.3% share.

In China, non-electric chainsaw exports increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Sweden (-0.3% per year) and Brazil (+6.5% per year).

Export Prices By Country

In 2022, the average non-electric chainsaw export price amounted to $83 per unit, approximately reflecting the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a pronounced downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 39%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $180 per unit in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Sweden ($289 per unit), while China ($55 per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United States (-0.2%), while the other global leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
