Olive Oil Price in Costa Rica (CIF) - 2021
In March 2020, the average olive oil import price amounted to $3,269 per ton, falling by -16.4% against the previous month. Overall, the import price showed a deep contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in February 2020 when the average import price increased by 0.4% m-o-m. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $3,910 per ton, and then declined significantly in the following month.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In March 2020, the country with the highest price was Spain ($3,816 per ton), while the price for Italy ($2,779 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2020 to March 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Spain (+0.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
Olive Oil Price in Costa Rica (FOB) - 2022
The average olive oil export price stood at $2,884 per ton in 2022, rising by 1.5% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a noticeable curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the average export price increased by 55%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $6,204 per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Nicaragua ($3,398 per ton), while the average price for exports to Panama ($2,133 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Nicaragua (+0.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
Olive Oil Imports in Costa Rica
In 2022, the amount of olive oil and its fractions imported into Costa Rica soared to 1.7K tons, picking up by 17% on the year before. In general, imports, however, recorded a mild reduction.
In value terms, olive oil imports expanded notably to $7.6M in 2022. Overall, imports, however, saw a slight decrease.

Olive Oil Exports in Costa Rica
In 2022, the amount of olive oil and its fractions exported from Costa Rica contracted modestly to 24 tons, dropping by -4.9% against the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 11% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 26 tons, and then shrank modestly in the following year.
In value terms, olive oil exports declined modestly to $70K in 2022. Overall, exports showed a deep contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 7.3%.
