Onion Price in Australia (FOB) - 2022

The average onion export price stood at $608 per ton in 2022, jumping by 20% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.0%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 20% against the previous year. The export price peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($926 per ton), while the average price for exports to Thailand ($453 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Malaysia (+8.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Onion Price in Australia (CIF) - 2024

In April 2024, the average onion import price amounted to $952 per ton, picking up by 9.7% against the previous month. In general, import price indicated mild growth from April 2023 to April 2024: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +1.5% over the last twelve months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on April 2024 figures, onion import price increased by +44.1% against January 2024 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in November 2023 when the average import price increased by 44% month-to-month. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $1,010 per ton. From December 2023 to April 2024, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($1,754 per ton), while the price for China amounted to $834 per ton.

From April 2023 to April 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+0.4%).

Onion Exports in Australia

In 2022, the amount of onions (dry) exported from Australia shrank dramatically to 34K tons, reducing by -32.1% against 2021 figures. Over the period under review, exports saw a deep setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 23%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 50K tons, and then fell notably in the following year.

In value terms, onion exports declined remarkably to $21M in 2022. Overall, exports showed a abrupt decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 15% against the previous year.
