The average onion import price stood at $319 per ton in March 2024, reducing by -4.6% against the previous month. In general, the import price recorded a noticeable shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in April 2023 an increase of 28% against the previous month. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $748 per ton. From May 2023 to March 2024, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Serbia ($370 per ton), while the price for Turkey ($192 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From March 2023 to March 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Serbia (+5.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average onion export price stood at $821 per ton in 2022, with an increase of 33% against the previous year. In general, the export price enjoyed resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the average export price increased by 260% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $1,468 per ton. From 2018 to 2022, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($1,573 per ton), while the average price for exports to Hungary ($211 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Luxembourg (+19.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
