Onion Price in Ecuador (FOB) - 2022

In 2022, the average onion export price amounted to $286 per ton, picking up by 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated a mild increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when the average export price increased by 91%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $308 per ton. From 2016 to 2022, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Canada ($1,681 per ton), while the average price for exports to Colombia ($55 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United States (-4.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

The average onion import price stood at $210 per ton in 2022, falling by -14.4% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, enjoyed a noticeable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 46% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $361 per ton. From 2021 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Chile ($355 per ton), while the price for Peru amounted to $186 per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Peru (+3.3%).

Onion Exports in Ecuador

For the fourth year in a row, Ecuador recorded growth in overseas shipments of onions (dry), which increased by 311% to 7.2K tons in 2022. Over the period under review, exports enjoyed a significant increase. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, onion exports surged to $2.1M in 2022. Overall, exports enjoyed a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 136%. The exports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Onion Imports in Ecuador

In 2022, imports of onions (dry) into Ecuador surged to 1.9K tons, with an increase of 53% compared with the year before. In general, imports saw a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 114%. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, onion imports soared to $394K in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a prominent increase from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +14.6% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +91.1% against 2020 indices.
