The average onion import price stood at $1,012 per ton in March 2024, which is down by -4.3% against the previous month. Overall, the import price recorded a slight downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in January 2024 an increase of 23% against the previous month. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $1,323 per ton. From February 2024 to March 2024, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was India ($2,639 per ton), while the price for Australia ($766 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From March 2023 to March 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+3.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average onion export price stood at $478 per ton in March 2024, waning by -29.1% against the previous month. In general, the export price recorded a perceptible curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in April 2023 an increase of 55% month-to-month. The export price peaked at $1,391 per ton in July 2023; however, from August 2023 to March 2024, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In March 2024, the country with the highest price was the UK ($2,380 per ton), while the average price for exports to Bosnia and Herzegovina ($350 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From March 2023 to March 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Belgium (+15.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

For the third year in a row, Germany recorded decline in supplies from abroad of onions (dry), which decreased by -10% to 226K tons in 2022. Overall, imports showed a abrupt decline. The smallest decline of -4.4% was in 2021.
In value terms, onion imports fell to $181M in 2022. In general, imports continue to indicate a abrupt shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 13%.
