In March 2024, the average onion import price amounted to $617 per ton, declining by -17% against the previous month. Over the period from March 2023 to March 2024, it increased at an average monthly rate of +2.1%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in July 2023 when the average import price increased by 26% against the previous month. The import price peaked at $744 per ton in February 2024, and then contracted notably in the following month.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In March 2024, the country with the highest price was Spain ($2,219 per ton), while the price for Ukraine ($372 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From March 2023 to March 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+11.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average onion export price stood at $424 per ton in 2022, rising by 34% against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average export price increased by 41%. The export price peaked at $491 per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($882 per ton), while the average price for exports to Bulgaria ($263 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Poland (+8.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
