Onion Price in Hungary (CIF) - 2022

In 2022, the average onion import price amounted to $481 per ton, with an increase of 6.6% against the previous year. Overall, import price indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, onion import price decreased by -24.0% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the average import price increased by 61% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $632 per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Poland ($603 per ton), while the price for Serbia ($289 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (+7.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Onion Price in Hungary (FOB) - 2024

In February 2024, the average onion export price amounted to $2,003 per ton, increasing by 13% against the previous month. In general, the export price continues to indicate a pronounced increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in January 2024 an increase of 248% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure in February 2024.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Albania ($3,942 per ton), while the average price for exports to Ukraine ($1,126 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From February 2023 to February 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Bosnia and Herzegovina (+56.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Onion Imports in Hungary

In 2022, purchases abroad of onions (dry) decreased by -20.2% to 19K tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. In general, imports continue to indicate a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 8%. As a result, imports attained the peak of 28K tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, onion imports contracted to $9.2M in 2022. Overall, imports continue to indicate a deep reduction. The smallest decline of -8.1% was in 2021.

In 2022, the amount of onions (dry) exported from Hungary surged to 1.2K tons, picking up by 74% compared with the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a pronounced reduction.

In value terms, onion exports surged to $775K in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded a abrupt setback.
