Onion Price in Ireland (CIF) - 2024

The average onion import price stood at $1,307 per ton in March 2024, surging by 15% against the previous month. In general, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in February 2024 when the average import price increased by 20% m-o-m. The import price peaked in March 2024.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In March 2024, the country with the highest price was the UK ($2,722 per ton), while the price for South Africa ($953 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From March 2023 to March 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+2.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Onion Price in Ireland (FOB) - 2024

The average onion export price stood at $1,696 per ton in March 2024, stabilizing at the previous month. In general, the export price, however, recorded slight growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in January 2024 when the average export price increased by 35% m-o-m. The export price peaked at $1,715 per ton in February 2024, and then fell slightly in the following month.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In March 2024, the country with the highest price was Iceland ($2,957 per ton), while the average price for exports to the UK totaled $1,510 per ton.

From March 2023 to March 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Iceland (+1.5%).

Onion Imports in Ireland

For the fourth year in a row, Ireland recorded growth in purchases abroad of onions (dry), which increased by 9.6% to 42K tons in 2022. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, onion imports expanded markedly to $30M in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern.

Onion Exports in Ireland

After three years of growth, overseas shipments of onions (dry) decreased by -9.9% to 2.6K tons in 2022. In general, total exports indicated a prominent expansion from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +18.8% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +67.9% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 47% against the previous year.

In value terms, onion exports reduced to $2.5M in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the period from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 19% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $2.9M, and then reduced in the following year.
