In 2022, the average onion import price amounted to $703 per ton, standing approx. at the previous year. Overall, import price indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, onion import price increased by +85.9% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average import price increased by 66% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $705 per ton in 2021, and then shrank modestly in the following year.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the highest price was recorded for prices from the Netherlands ($703 per ton) and Turkey ($703 per ton), while the price for China ($703 per ton) and Belgium ($703 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Turkey (+14.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Onion Imports in Israel
In 2022, overseas purchases of onions (dry) were finally on the rise to reach 17K tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, imports, however, showed a deep reduction.
