Onion Price in New Zealand (FOB) - 2024

In April 2024, the average onion export price amounted to $673 per ton, shrinking by -5.3% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a mild contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in November 2023 when the average export price increased by 14% against the previous month. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $979 per ton. From December 2023 to April 2024, the the average export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Norway ($966 per ton), while the average price for exports to the United States ($452 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From April 2023 to April 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to France (+1.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Onion Price in New Zealand (CIF) - 2022

The average onion import price stood at $1,831 per ton in 2022, with an increase of 26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a resilient expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the average import price increased by 73%. The import price peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($1,844 per ton), while the price for China totaled $835 per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United States (+6.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.

In 2022, shipments abroad of onions (dry) decreased by -28.4% to 145K tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. In general, exports saw a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 13% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 202K tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, onion exports declined rapidly to $80M in 2022. Over the period under review, exports showed a deep contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 5.8% against the previous year.
