In 2022, the average onion import price amounted to $143 per ton, picking up by 33% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a perceptible shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the average import price increased by 41% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $312 per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Argentina ($154 per ton), while the price for Brazil stood at $73 per ton.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Argentina (-3.6%).
Onion Imports in Paraguay
In 2022, overseas purchases of onions (dry) decreased by -3.5% to 44K tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +16.5% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -13.2% against 2020 indices. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
