The average onion import price stood at $445 per ton in April 2024, falling by -32.8% against the previous month. Overall, the import price recorded a abrupt downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in January 2024 an increase of 28% month-to-month. The import price peaked at $930 per ton in April 2023; however, from May 2023 to April 2024, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In April 2024, the country with the highest price was China ($819 per ton), while the price for Iran ($146 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From April 2023 to April 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Pakistan (+9.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

For the third consecutive year, Qatar recorded decline in overseas purchases of onions (dry), which decreased by -47.1% to 27K tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports recorded a sharp decrease. The smallest decline of -9.2% was in 2021.
In value terms, onion imports fell sharply to $11M in 2022. In general, imports saw a significant contraction. The smallest decline of -14.3% was in 2020.
