Onion Price in Sri Lanka (CIF) - 2022
The average onion import price stood at $292 per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -17.9% against the previous year. Overall, import price indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, onion import price decreased by -19.2% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 74%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $489 per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($613 per ton), while the price for Pakistan ($237 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+6.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average onion export price amounted to $1,375 per ton, surging by 11% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.4%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 an increase of 18% against the previous year. The export price peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Switzerland ($1,832 per ton), while the average price for exports to Maldives ($408 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to India (+30.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Onion Imports in Sri Lanka
For the fourth consecutive year, Sri Lanka recorded growth in purchases abroad of onions (dry), which increased by 4.7% to 278K tons in 2022. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, onion imports fell to $81M in 2022. Overall, imports, however, showed a perceptible shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 3.2%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $95M, and then fell in the following year.

For the third consecutive year, Sri Lanka recorded decline in shipments abroad of onions (dry), which decreased by -37.4% to 293 tons in 2022. In general, exports continue to indicate a precipitous curtailment. The smallest decline of -31.7% was in 2020.
In value terms, onion exports contracted notably to $388K in 2022. Over the period under review, exports showed a sharp curtailment. The smallest decline of -33.3% was in 2021.
