Production By Country
The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were the United States (3.8M tons), Vietnam (2.2M tons) and Germany (1M tons), together comprising 59% of global production.

Imports
World Imports of Other Papers Packaging
After four years of growth, purchases abroad of other papers packaging decreased by -10.2% to 2.3M tons in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 29% against the previous year. Global imports peaked at 2.6M tons in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.
In value terms, other papers packaging imports expanded sharply to $1.9B in 2022. In general, total imports indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +88.2% against 2015 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 36%. Global imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.
Imports By Country
In 2022, China (494K tons), distantly followed by Germany (185K tons) and the Netherlands (142K tons) were the main importers of other papers packaging, together mixing up 36% of total imports. Spain (103K tons), the United States (102K tons), Poland (100K tons), France (93K tons), the UK (88K tons), Taiwan (Chinese) (87K tons), Sweden (50K tons), South Korea (46K tons), Turkey (45K tons) and Denmark (39K tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
China was also the fastest-growing in terms of the other papers packaging imports, with a CAGR of +36.9% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, South Korea (+17.9%), Denmark (+11.4%), Spain (+9.8%), Turkey (+6.3%), Taiwan (Chinese) (+5.4%), the UK (+5.4%), the Netherlands (+3.4%), the United States (+3.4%), Poland (+3.0%) and France (+1.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Germany experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Sweden (-2.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of China and Spain increased by +20 and +1.9 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest other papers packaging importing markets worldwide were China ($219M), Germany ($149M) and the Netherlands ($131M), together comprising 27% of global imports.
Among the main importing countries, China, with a CAGR of +24.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices By Country
The average other papers packaging import price stood at $807 per ton in 2022, with an increase of 18% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.0%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Korea ($1,137 per ton), while China ($444 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of other papers packaging, when their volume decreased by -5.2% to 2.3M tons. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 16% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 2.4M tons, and then shrank in the following year.
In value terms, other papers packaging exports skyrocketed to $2.1B in 2022. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +75.2% against 2016 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 32% against the previous year. The global exports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
Exports By Country
Italy (379K tons), China (257K tons), Germany (251K tons), France (190K tons), Finland (185K tons), Spain (132K tons) and the United States (119K tons) represented roughly 67% of total exports in 2022. The following exporters - Vietnam (79K tons), Canada (78K tons), Malaysia (68K tons), Japan (45K tons), Sweden (41K tons) and the Netherlands (40K tons) - together made up 16% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Vietnam (with a CAGR of +83.0%), while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, China ($508M), Italy ($295M) and Germany ($240M) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 49% share of global exports. Finland, France, the United States, Spain, Canada, Japan, Malaysia, Sweden, Vietnam and the Netherlands lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 38%.
Vietnam, with a CAGR of +73.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices By Country
The average other papers packaging export price stood at $950 per ton in 2022, with an increase of 22% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.8%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was China ($1,981 per ton), while Vietnam ($407 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
