Paper Price in the United States (CIF) - 2022
In 2022, the average paper import price amounted to $1.4 per square meter, flattening at the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a precipitous descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 73%. The import price peaked at $4,969 per square meter in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the countries with the highest prices were the UK ($1.4 per square meter) and Mexico ($1.4 per square meter), while the price for France ($1.4 per square meter) and South Korea ($1.4 per square meter) were amongst the lowest.
From 2013 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Brazil (-50.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
Paper Price in the United States (FOB) - 2022
The average paper export price stood at $2.2 per square meter in 2022, standing approx. at the previous year. In general, the export price, however, faced a precipitous decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the average export price increased by 15%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $526 per square meter. From 2015 to 2022, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied noticeably for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the countries with the highest prices were India ($2.2 per square meter) and China ($2.2 per square meter), while the average price for exports to Germany ($2.2 per square meter) and Canada ($2.2 per square meter) were amongst the lowest.
From 2013 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to India (-25.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
Paper Imports in the United States
Paper imports into the United States surged to 3.6B square meters in 2022, with an increase of 43% against 2021. Overall, imports showed a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 280,657% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, paper imports skyrocketed to $5.2B in 2022. In general, total imports indicated a remarkable increase from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +8.5% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +58.4% against 2020 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 9,590% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, paper exports expanded remarkably to $2.4B in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain years. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
