Peanut Butter Price in Japan (CIF) - 2023
The average peanut butter import price stood at $2,567 per ton in July 2023, with an increase of 3.9% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in November 2022 when the average import price increased by 6.9% month-to-month. The import price peaked in July 2023.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In July 2023, the country with the highest price was the United States ($6,447 per ton), while the price for China amounted to $2,375 per ton.
From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+0.2%).
Peanut Butter Price in Japan (FOB) - 2023
In July 2023, the average peanut butter export price amounted to $6,751 per ton, growing by 14% against the previous month. Overall, the export price, however, saw a noticeable slump. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $9,198 per ton in January 2023; however, from February 2023 to July 2023, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In July 2023, the country with the highest price was the United States ($10,054 per ton), while the average price for exports to China ($5,311 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to South Korea (+1.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Peanut Butter Imports in Japan
In 2022, overseas purchases of peanut butter and prepared or preserved groundnuts decreased by -7.9% to 44K tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. In general, imports showed a abrupt contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 0.1%. As a result, imports attained the peak of 53K tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, peanut butter imports declined to $108M in 2022. Overall, imports showed a perceptible decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 9.3% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $133M. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +8.7% over the period from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, peanut butter exports reduced rapidly to $1.7M in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the period from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 15% against the previous year.
